Does net zero go far enough? That was the question I was asked to debate for an episode of UCL’s The Bridge podcast, part of their Disagreeing Well programme. Unsurprisingly, I said no. Moreover, I argued net zero was never enough because it didn’t respond to what the climate crisis demanded – which was the rapid phase out of fossil fuels. Today, some folk are arguing net zero is not enough because we need large amounts of carbon removal, and so we are seeing net zero evolve into overshoot. When that doesn’t arrive in time we will then see overshoot + which will be attempts at CDR + solar geoengineering. But these are the consequences of an underlying inability to actually deal with the drivers of climate change. Many thanks to my discussant Emma Fieldhouse, the UCL hosts and producers.
