Consulting

Before returning to academia, I spent most of my 20s and early 30s working in the IT industry, towards the end as a consultant working in information security and disaster recovery. The information security role was much more fun, and at times much much more stressful. I managed a lab of so-called “ethical hackers”. So-called because the line between the ethical “white hat” and shady “black hat” hacker was not always easy to discern. Does that make them grey hats? I have some tales working out of an office in Bangkok in the early 2000s – but I can’t tell you them! Compared to the industry today, it felt like the Wild West.

Now I find myself consulting again through my academic and writing roles. This is work I haven’t looked for but has now reached the stage where I guess I should recognise. It largely consists of:

  • Research within a number of sustainability-related areas that culminates in bespoke reports .
  • Participation in seminars and retreats including keynote presentations.
  • Reviewing scripts for factual television shows relating to climate change/carbon footprints.
  • Reviewing sustainability-related educational materials.
  • Facilitation of groups (typically using the Prosocial World process)
  • Academic community building in order to tackle systemic issues in academia relating to sustainability (from 2020 to 2023 via Faculty for a Future).

I am always open to new consulting engagements, you can contact me via helloATjamesgdyke.info. Please be advised that there are times where I have very limited capacity and so there could be a delay or even a regretful decline.
