Open letter from scientists to Rt Hon Greg Hands, Minister of State for Energy, Clean Growth
and Climate Change

“Mr Rose, a 52-year-old software engineer who calls himself the ‘Uncle On Hunger Strike’, hasn’t eaten since March 14th and has now lost two stone. He has been outside Parliament every day protesting for such a briefing, which has so far been refused three times by Mr Hands, who met Angus on Thursday this week. Freedom of Information requests discovered that Sir Patrick gave a similar unreported briefing to the Prime Minister in 2020, and this briefing led to significant changes in Government policy, strengthening the Government’s approach to the Climate Emergency” This text taken from 9th April press release

I, along with 78 other climate change and environmental academics and experts have signed an open letter supporting Angus Rose in his attempts to have the House of Commons learn about the climate crisis. The letter begins:

“We are deeply concerned about Mr Angus Rose, a software engineer from London, who is on an indefinite hunger strike outside the Houses of Parliament since 14th March. He is asking that members of the House of Commons receive a briefing from the Government Chief Scientific
Adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, on the risks of and solutions to the climate crisis. He is also asking for this briefing to be televised.”
