James’ research focuses on the interface of climate and Earth system science with policy and strategy. He acknowledges that we failed to avoid dangerous climate change and that this has unavoidable consequences. Risks abound in this turbulent new world. James has decades of experience working with organisations to help them better understand what our collective futures may look like using a range of systems approaches that helps identify key trends and contextualises research.

James is a trained Prosocial and Six Hats facilitator. In partnership with the Strategic Climate Risks Initiative he has designed a 3 Horizons workshop that leads participants through an exploration of climate risks and futures beyond 1.5°C. James has previously provided facilitation and training for organisations that include: Royal Society of ArtsC40Doughnut Economics Action Lab, Max Plank Institute of Biogeochemistry, TED Countdown, and Global Tipping Points Conference.

James is an experienced trainer and leader of executive education. Grounded on his design and management of postgraduate programmes and his consultancy experience, he has developed innovative climate and sustainability courses. This includes an online systems thinking programme developed in partnership with Arup, .

Dr James Dyke DPhil is an Associate Professor in Earth Systems Science, Director of the Environmental Intelligence CDT, and Assistant Director of the Global Systems Institute, University of Exeter. James is a Fellow of European Geophysical Union, the Earth League, the Higher Education Academy, and the Royal Society of Arts. James has bylines in publications that include The Guardian, The Independent, The i Paper, Washington Post, Boston Globe, and Bloomberg. His book Fire, Storm and Flood: The Violence of Climate Change was published in 2021. James is a regular contributor to TV, radio and online media.
